Artwork of the Week: Goya’s The Repentant Saint Peter

This week for our Artwork of the Week (formerly Wordless Wednesday), I decided to do a little digging into the artwork of one of my favorite artists, Francisco Goya. The usual suspects for Goya are The Third of May, Saturn Devouring His Son, and The Disasters of War, but I wanted to find something I had never seen before.

Enter The Repentant Saint Peter.

Isn’t it stunning? The emotion, the painterly quality, plus the Baroque-Rembrandtyness (yes, that is a new word, Rembrandtyness) of it really pulled me in. It’s gritty and emotional–just like I like my Goyas.

On the Phillips Collection website, they called this “a stepping stone between the Old Masters and the great Moderns,” and you can really see that in this painting.

Also, when doing some research into this painting, I found that the Phillips Collection has two St. Peter paintings which they hilariously call “Pete” and “RePete.” Love it.

Take a look at this El Greco painting of St. Peter. This would be a great compare/contrast activity with students.

Kinesthetic Learning in Art: Artworks That Make You Move

On Monday, I listed 10 kinesthetic art activities to do in front of works of art. Now, here are 12 artworks that can be explored through movement. Show the art to the kids and get them moving with some kinesthetic art appreciation activities!

Don’t stop there; be sure to discuss the artwork with your students as well using these ways to talk about art with kids.

Note: Some of these artworks contain nudity. You can make the decision for your own families/classes whether or not you are comfortable showing it to kids. The great majority of students I’ve taught were able to handle this respectfully. It’s only weird if you make it weird.

25 Favorite Madonna and Childs in Art History

Of all the subjects in all of art history, I would place money on Madonna and Child being the most represented subject in art. Just type “Madonna and Child” into a Google image search, and you will find an endless list of beautiful artworks. Today, I was going to do a 5 favorite Madonna and Child paintings post, but I absolutely couldn’t pick 5. I moved it to 10, then 12, then 20, and then I ended up at 25. I just found a 26th, and I can’t leave it out, so technically there are 26 in this list now. I pretty much spent all day looking at Madonnas.
