I have a major dilemma (fwp) here that I am trying to work out, so I thought I’d work it out here on the blog. In a couple of weeks, I am visiting New York City for the first time (squee!). I am super excited. My husband and I are going for five full days not counting the two travel days. We haven’t traveled much in our marriage (as I explained here), so I am super excited to tackle the big big big city with my hubby.
I tend to overdo it with the sightseeing. I wear myself down to the ground, and I am going to try to avoid that this time. I want to see ALL of the art museums. All. Of. Them. Realistically, with all of the other stuff we want to see, and with the limited time, we can probably only fit one art museum (we have plans for one or two other types of museums–especially the Air and Space Museum for Quark). How do I choose? Please, tell me in the comments which ones you loved and would recommend!
Because I am going to do this research anyway, I may as well sum it up here. Nevermind, I am ridiculous. I just started looking. There is no way I can’t go to the Met, right? It’s been a long time since I had the pleasure of losing myself in a giant museum. Look at this awesome map!
Oh no, but MOMA. Crap. I’ve seen a lot of the MOMA masterpieces when they came to Houston back in 2004-05, so maybe I don’t need to see them again right now. But I loved them, and they kind of changed the whole direction of my career (tl;dr version: I was applying to PhD programs in art history at the time and decided to switch to art education while
crying standing in front of this painting). I’d like to see my old friends again (here, here, here, and here). Oh man, I just saw they have Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso. I really need to see that. There is also MOMA PS1 which is contemporary art, and that would be really awesome and different.
And what about the Guggenheim? I teach about the architecture of the Guggenheim in my day job, and it would be cool to be able to add that personal connection to my lessons. I have no idea what art is there. I just looked. There is a lot of Chagall. I love Chagall, but we had a Chagall exhibition in Dallas last year. No, Guggenheim is out. I’ll go in and look up if we happen upon it.
Okay, this post has become ridiculous. It was going to be a nice pretty post showing the pros of each museum to give my visitors to the site a nice NYC resource. Nope. Sorry about that. I still haven’t made up my mind.
This is very exciting.
Where do you think we should go? Met or MOMA?
