Through all my years of teaching, nothing has ever changed what teachers do day to day like the Covid-19 pandemic. Overnight, teachers found ways to feed students who wouldn’t have enough to eat away from school. Teachers adapted to brand new programs and methods for teaching online. Teachers organized drive by parades to bring a little joy to their day.
We checked in on the ones we worry about. We gave grace to students even when we were overwhelmed and burnt out ourselves. We created digital classrooms and helped them find art supplies in what they had lying around the house. We kept going—even when it all felt like too much.
And now we’re staring down another year of uncertainty. Many of us still don’t know if we’re going to be in the classroom or on a cart or seeing all our students or some of our students or any of our students.
I felt this tweet in my bones….

It made me laugh, but there was a lot of fear and sadness under that laugh. We don’t know what this year is going to look like. Whatever plan we make, we know we have to be flexible. For many of us, that’s going to mean more months of staying home and distance learning.
Before summer started, we were all in survival mode. But this year is not lost.
You are a part of this community because you are an educator who cares. You are giving your students a piece of yourself and the world. Art unleashes our creativity and unlocks our humanity. Our students need art now more than ever.
So let’s do this. Together.
